THIRSTING FOR GOD

John chapter 7. verses 37 - 39 

Whenever we see an  "IN" in a statement,

there is evidence of a lack in the L I F E.

Without Water, a well is D R Y. 

 Without priming, it can not bring up the water. 

The two thieves on the cross were an example of this.

Luke chapter 23: v. 39 - 42. 

And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying "If thou be the Christ, save thyself and us."  But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost thou not fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds, but this man hath done nothing amiss."   And he said unto Jesus, "Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom."  And Jesus said unto him, "Verily I say unto thee, Today thou shalt be with me in paradise."  

     

                               John 7. verses 37 - 39 

           In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, "If any man thirst, let him come unto me. and drink, He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."  (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) 

        If you thirst, come to the FOUNTAIN OF LIVING WATER.   There are many types of thirst or cravings.    A person in severe pain, cries for a pain killing pill, while a dope addict craves the dope that will "ease" temporarily the cravings.    The alcoholic craves the liquor.    The greatest craving that all of of us have is for water..

       Let us consider three progressions in our thirst

         FIRST - HE WILL PROVIDE US WITH A DRINK.

     v. 37.   The condition -  Thirst or craving. 

       This is more than a desire to attend church or hear a sermon.

                                     

             In the context of the Feast of Tabernacles, on the last day of that feast, a whole week was spent in feasting and drinking.   We must have a thirst for the LIVING WATER.  Matthew 5: verse 6.    Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.    We need to have a sincere LOVE for the Lord. Example:  the relationship of a husband and wife for each other.    We need a personal relationship - much more than "a professional religionist"  -  someone going through the motions. 

We need to thirst to be close in life 

and walk with Jesus.  

       John chapter 15: v.  1 -5    I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.  Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.  Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.  Abide in me, and I in you.  As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.   I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bring forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

We have Living Water promised to us

     SECOND - HE WILL PROVIDE US A SPRING OR     FOUNTAIN:

A pump needs to be primed.   On the old "wells" the handle needed to be "oiled" before they could pull up the water.   Any tool needs "oil" before it is used - or to even keep it working.  

Ephesians 5.19   Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.  Study God's Word -  2 Timothy 2.15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.  Be a vessel of honor.

2 Timothy 2.21.  If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.   

       In a great house, vessels that are of gold and silver, wood, and clay, some of these are used for honor, some for dishonor.  We need to be HOT for the Lord, not lukewarm.  In Revelation chapter 3.v 15 - 16   I know thy works, that thou art neither hot nor cold: I would thou wert cold or hot.  So then because thou art neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.  In all of this,  the thirsting for God asks us to REST upon the Lord.     Matthew 11. verse 28.  COME UNTO ME ALL YE THAT LABOR AND ARE HEAVY LADEN AND I WILL GIVE YOU REST.   

       We shall be wells of living water.   John 4.13 - 14 

If any man thirst, let him come unto me. and drink, 
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."
Matthew 5.16  Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.

THIRD - HE WILL PROVIDE A RIVER OF LIVING WATER. 
There is no living water in the DEAD SEA -  for there is too much salt in it.

   THERE WILL BE A RIVER FLOWING WITHOUT 

               AND EVERYONE WILL SEE THE FLOW.

IF THE WATER IS CONSTANTLY FLOWING

THE WATER WILL STAY FRESH AND LIVING

JESUS IS THE SOURCE OF

STUDY AND PREPARATION

My husband worked for the U. S. Forest Service for many years,
as well as pastoring small churches in the Northwest.   

                As I look back, I am filled with a grateful sense of God's blessing in my life, because this dear man chose to manage his time in such a way that the Word of God was first in his life, and that he counted preparation as being an important ingredient to his work both for the Forest Service and for his pastoral ministry.    

                A young mother with three children, I found that he was flexible enough to let me call him on a Thursday or Friday morning and ask, "May we go to the Lake tonight?"   And most of the time, he said yes.    It meant that for my children, a chance to be with their Daddy, to be out in nature,  and to sing all the way to where we had a "picnic" by the Lake.

   Daddy built the fire and cooked the hamburg I had brought, and we did the rest.    The girls would always want to swim.   Sitting while the children played, he read the Newspaper, and cheerfully noted their activities.  

             Crescent Lake OR here.   Later, when we lived in Parkdale, it was Lost Lake OR to which we would travel.   

 Heading back just as it was getting dark, my dear Henry would smile, and ask "what CODE" shall we put this under? 

His little reference to the many, many codes and numbering methods the Government has for keeping track of its activities.   

                  The children would fall asleep in the car, while Henry drove home.   He had been working all day, studied in the Word of God before he had breakfast, and now was driving them home, all of them unaware of anything except full security in the knowledge that their Daddy loved them.  

                   He would, upon arriving at home,  sit down to his desk, and prepare for his message either for the Sunday morning, evening, or for the Wednesday nights in a "farmhouse" up in the mountain town of Appleton, WA.    

Even when he was at work he studied. He took

all the "books" they gave him to study and did the work

of retaining the information so that in time he became a liason 

between the government and the tree planters, or, 

teaching new recruits what to do on a PLANTATION EXAM,

or HOW TO PREPARE FOR A PLANTING CREW. 

                     As I remember not once did he ever complain that I was asking too much for him to go and take us for this outing.   Not ever, no, never, did he complain or remark that he was pressured or not feeling like he wanted to.

                      Now, here I am, looking at his papers and calendars that he left as his legacy for me and the children, and reflect how much importance that STUDY TIME and PREPARATION time was for him.   He fed on God's Word every opportunity that he could.   And yet, he included his family in his life enough that he could be flexible and work around what he must do, and should do, to do what he liked to do - fellowship with his family.

                     My lesson in this post, is that I urge you to put the study of God's Word and the preparation of your Heart for what happens in your life, by preparing for the expected duties and jobs you have to do, but be flexible enough that like Jesus who never turned anyone away, you can find time for the people who love you and are closest to you.    Your family is important.   However, unless a man or women puts their dependence on God, and His Word first and foremost, you will not have the ability to manage your time as well as you should.   

                   

 This was his desk which he had for many years in our

home.   He often would study before I got up in the morning, 

and again, would be at it in the evening after the day's events.

                 Keep Climbing.   I am looking forward to this new year with a view to setting new goals.   One of these is to STUDY AND PREPARE.   God takes care of the rest.

The progress many students make in college is affected

in some way or other 

by the problem of finances.

--- There are two types of college loans
Short Term, and Long Term.

      It is unwise for college students

to depend upon loans for 

all his college education.

The part-time employer should be fair

to the student as as the student being

fair to the employer.

It is an established fact that in vocational guidance, that occupational interest persiststhroughout life.    Since most social workers arewomen, men have many opportunities for advancement to executive positions.

[Somewhat outdated - but at the time, true]

Health services are the most needed in our nation.

The ministry on the whole is a very low paid profession, how there is considerable stratification, similar to teaching. More than one third of workers in the U S A
                            are unskilled.  [This statistic may be outdated.]

Young people should never be blindly 

guided by their parents in choosing a

vocation.

 One danger many young people have

is that of drifting, with nothing in view 

that he / she is preparing for.

1. The college student should major in the subject that
2. will help him in his future vocation.

HENRY'S THOUGHTS ON THE FACTS

One should depend on God for his needs.

We must not become lazy, for God

 has given us our physical 

structure, our abilities, and our talents 

to be used for His glory.

A young person should get 

the highest preparation before he can

expect to have the highest opportunities 

for advancement.

While Time marches on,   I keep walking.  

  Here I am heading on into my 80th decade, with a new pair of glasses [ newer than the ones I have in this photo] and I am indeed blessed beyond measure, because I am now situated by the Pacific Ocean at Drayton Harbor, in Blaine WA.
    Look for my blog if you like to think about what it means to be a Believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and if you are excited about His Soon Coming.    There is lots to live for, and much to think about.

    My verse for today is   Philippians 3 verses 7 - 14

What things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Jesus Christ.

Yea, doubtless, and I count all things but dung, that I may win Christ.   And be found in Him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith, that I may know Him, and the power of His Resurrection, and the Fellowship of His Sufferings, being made conformable unto His death, if by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.   Not as though I had attained, either were already perfect, but I follow after, that I may apprehend [grasp hold of] that for which I am also apprehended [grasped] of Jesus Christ.   Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those thing which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

MY BELIEFS ABOUT GOD

1927 - 2012

*   I believe that there is only one true God. 

*  I believe in the Trinity, that God is revealed in three 

personalities; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, but there

is only One God.

*I believe that all three personalities of the Trinity are 

equal in power, but that each has a specific task to perform.

*  I think of the Father as the Creator, The Son as the Savior,

and the Holy Spirit as the Comforter.

*  I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ was in the beginning with God the Father.

*  I believe that the Lord Jesus was incarnated in the form of

man 1900 [in 1949] years ago to save man from their sins.

*  I believe that when Jesus was on this earth that he was both God and Man.   

8*  I believe that Jesus had temptations and was conscious of all physical surroundings, the same as any other man.

* I believe in all the miracles that Jesus performed on this earth.

*  I believe that Jesus went to the cruel cross to pay the price 

for our sins.

*  I believe that Jesus was resurrected from the dead, and that

He is preparing a place for those who love Him.

*  I believe that this same Jesus will come again in like manner.

*  I believe that only those who trust Jesus as their personal

 Savior will ever see the kingdom of God.

*.  I believe that the whole Bible is the inspired Word of God.

*  I believe in the eternal security of those who have made a true decision to follow Christ as their Savior.

OUR STORY CAME TOGETHER IN 1960

    

This was my dear husband

 just after we got married in 1960. 

       He was 32, almost 33, and we had written for a year and a half.  We met when he decided to come through Sacramento CA as he went down to meetings and family in San Diego CA.   A month later, he proposed to me by mail.   I accepted, and we were married in Sacto. CA at the Central Baptist Church.     It lasted until he passed on to glory in June of 2012.

How I cherish the memories.   When I see Christ, I will be able to say gladly, "By God's Grace, I am here"  

          Henry graduated from Linda Vista Baptist Bible College & Seminary on May 12, 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and a Bachelor of Theology degree.   On May 18, 1953, he received a degree in Bachelor of Divinity, and a Master of Theology degree. How privileged I am to say that though I did not know before 1959, it was meant to be that we would marry.  

         How he believed and prayed and dreamed is reflected in this photo of him in 1952.  

  He was born 1927 while I was born six years later, in 1933.   All the time I was growing up, God gave me "impressions" of someone SURELY going to be my husband one day.   I did not always pay attention.   I did come to a certainty that there WAS someone out there - but I did not always act appropriately.    How thankful I am that God is Sovereign, and that He knows and cares, and that this man was praying for a wife, and believe me, I needed prayer.   

             My determination did not always stay with me, and I would get side-tracked from what God wanted me to do.   My self-will got in the way.   How it worked out is a testimony to God's grace in my life.

Born in 1933, it was 1945 here.   

Very little upbringing in any faith, I remember as a little girl my mother saying to me,"When you grow up, and find God and believe in Him, I want you to tell me about Him, and I will believe too."

Somehow, Mother thought that because I was Jewish from my Daddy's side, that I would have "an in" with God.   It was not so, but it did give me A PURPOSE in my life.  I found myself looking for what was true, right, good, and found myself reasoning at a young age, about who God was, is, and should be in my life.

It was in the 5th grade, at age 11, that a gentleman came to my grade school class and asked permission to hand out New Testaments.  The teacher said yes, and I got mine.   In it was written II Timothy 2.15  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."  

There were other verses given - it was a Gideon Bible, and very good for me.  I looked up all the verses, and gave my life and heart to Jesus as my Lord and Savior.   I was not attending church at that time.   In that year, I remember going to Girl Scouts and learning the ten commandments.   The Girl Scout promise was 

"to do my duty to God and my country," among other things, so my heart was tenderized to read God's Word. 

You must understand that I am a redhead, and that

in my life, I was "Italian, somewhat but not Jewish" 

and very English on my Mom's side.   

My mother's folks were from ingrained YANKEE NEW ENGLAND folk.  

 Their forefathers were independent, many of them Baptist, and inclined to think for themselves.   They came over on the Mayflower to escape persecution, and often were maligned or misunderstood because they were so independent, and did not "just go to church" perse.   Hardworkers, and inclined to be educated generally, they thought for themselves.

 MY GRANDFATHER (FORREST RAYMOND CARPENTER) HAD 

STRONG DISSENTERS IN HIS FAMILY.  THIS IS HIS GRANDFATHER, 

GEORGE ALBERT CARPENTER.

THIS WAS MY GRANDMOTHER'S MOTHER AS A YOUNG WOMAN, 

VIDA MAY INGALLS.  THIS MAY HAVE BEEN THE WEDDING DRESS

TO LUTHER WILBUR BREWER OF EASTHAM, MA.  

LUTHER WAS A TANNER, WORKING WITH LEATHER TO MAKE

GEAR FOR HORSES AND CARRIAGES.

On my father's side, I knew little.  

All I knew at the time was that his Mother was Jewish, of New York state, and that his father Orestes Donato was Italian, from Northern Italy.   My father had been raised by his Aunt Sally, not his mother.   His father returned to Italy with two brothers.   I know now that he remarried, and that I have relatives in the U S A.  I know now, that my father's father - Orestes Donato, was born in Tunisia, Africa while his father - my great grandfather Major Guiseppe Donato was a Major in the Italian Army while serving under the Italian King.

His wife, Nunia, was born in Russia.    There was no evidence of any religious affiliation - so I assume that they were Jews that came here hoping for a better life.   

This was my Dad in 1940.   I was 7 years of age at that time, and thought my father was very handsome.   He had been boarded out "as soon as he was old enough" by Aunt Sally who did what she thought was "proper" and then sent him to the New York Episcopal School of Music - where he learned to sing tenor, read music and to participate in the Episcopal church there where the school was situated.    Aunt Sally was of a "different" way of life for me.  She told palm readings to the rich and famous in order to make a living.  She lived in No Falmouth MA (Cape Cod) in the Summer and in the winter, lived in Florida.    I saw her only about three times in my life, and those were brief.   My biggest memory of the great grandmother is that she was a HUGE woman, who looked much like Golda Meier.   Strong features,  very intelligent, and quite in charge of her family.   My family was never able to discover why my Dad's mother was not raising him.   I did later on in my life discover he was born at the Ipswich NY Women's Reformatory.  

       My sister asked me, Why would that have been? where he was born?   I told her what I knew.   That in our country a law had been passed around 1884 and was in effect until about 1904 - which declared "a law establishing reformatories and villages" in which people who were homeless, on the street, and without work would be put in the villages, and anyone who was judged "immoral or indigent" was placed in a reformatory.   If a woman got pregnant, unmarried, or if married and the husband was out of work, then she would be considered as "a prostitute" so it is likely my grand-father was out of work, and not able to support her.  Even if the child was his, he could stop authorities from doing this.   They had the power to put anyone where they wanted.    I understand that in "these villages" that were created it was like a nightmare of travesties where the care was just "watching over cattle" not people.  

Many tried to commit suicide the conditions were so bad. 

Well, such as it was, the law was repealed before I was born. I understand that my Great grandmother Nunzia Donato was living up until 1975.   I would have liked to have known her.

My mother and father, the day after I was born, 

on June 9, 1933. 

       On my mother's side, I am related to the Carpenters, Cooks, Browns, and Greens who many of them were children of those that came over on the Mayflower in 1620. 

My Mother at age 17 had me, in 1933.    Strange, but Henry's mother was only 17 when she had him as her first child of nine. Anna Maude Sandine married Wm. Henry Cash, and in 1927 Henry was born in Rison Arkansas.  

     From what I understand, on Henry's Mother's side, she was a full blooded Swede, named Anna Maude Sandine.

Henry's father was named after a famous preacher Uncle Wm. Henry Cash who before the Civil War was a plantation owner, but after the Civil War he became an Itinerant Circuit Preacher and was beloved by all. 
       
  He was the father of Reuben who then had Ray and Roy Cash.   Roy Cash was Johnny Cash the singer's father, while Ray Cash was Henry's grandfather's father.  So Henry's grandfather Garret Gibson Cash was a first cousin to Johnny Cash's father.

Apr 12, 1861 – May 9, 1865 were the Civil War years.

I will put a link to the obituary of this dear man.   Although my father in law did not become a preacher, my husband did.  How grateful I am for believing folks in our families that prayed over the years.

I believe that the "daylight standard time" was

                                                             

a conflict that day, and the doctor who delivered Henry chose to use May 26, not May 25th.   I understand another friend of mine to have had her Mother choose the 26th instead of 25th but she too celebrates two days of "birth" ...

This is the first entry of my life and Henry's.  I look forward to sharing it as I go along.
