biblebuffjournal99 - MOTHER WAS A LADY -PART 1

WALKING BY FAITH - I KEEP CLIMBING

MOTHER WAS A LADY

                                                       by June Estelle Cash

My memories of my mother was that she was a lady.
She fought for her kids.   She kept her integrity.  She stood on her ground when the question of her "morals" came up.
To begin with, Mother's name was Vida May Carpenter, born April 8, 1915.  It was a time of uncertainty, and yet of optimistic hope.   1914 was the year Forrest married Lillias, in the very beginning of a year when our country went to war.    Her first memory is of her grandmother  Vida May (Ingalls) Brewer who cared for her while her mother "recuperated" from having this little girl.     The love that Grandmother gave her was so unconditional that my mother fondly remembered as the R O C K of her family.
Forrest Raymond Carpenter, Mother's father, was working with the Electrical Company of the mill in Shelburne Falls, MA.

This was Lillias May (Brewer) Carpenter
with her daughter Vida May, April  1915.

SHELBURNE FALLS, MA

https://www.shelburnefalls.com/

HERE ARE TWO PICTURES, ONE OF PRESENT DAY LOOK AT
SHELBURNE FALLS OLD BUILDING, ALSO A PHOTO OF
WINTER AT THE AREA WHERE THE BRIDGE IN SHELBURNE
WAS.   TODAY IT IS NEWLY FURBISHED, BUT THEN IT WAS
MERELY IRON GRID, EVEN UP TO 1987 WHEN WE VISITED THERE.

TODAY IT IS A FULLY CEMENTED BRIDGE, WITH MANY FLOWERS.

MOTHER'S SOON REALIZED THEY HAD A CHALLENGE ON THEIR HANDS.
SHE WAS A REDHEAD.  HER MOTHER WAS A REDHEAD.  HER GRANDFATHER WAS A REDHEAD.  AND SHE ASKED QUESTIONS.   INQUISITIVE, SHE WANTED TO KNOW
"WHY?"

Here we were.   Both parents were perplexed.
In 1915  Children WERE TO BE SILENT
AND NOT TO SPEAK UP

Why?

She asked.

In that era of time, EMPLOYERS did not allow
their children to play with the children of the
EMPLOYED - the workers -

it just was not done.

She took in what people said, and thought about them.   She was told, Vida, you cannot play with .....  The children of the
workers were not to be her playmates.

Your father, her mother declared, is part of the Employer's staff- working as the Electrician - and you cannot play with the children of those who are not on the staff.      Why? she thought, was it B A D  to play with the children of the workers?

Mother did not know that the reputation of the mill was not good.   The conditions of the mill worker were less than what really was desirable.    Her father did NOT WANT HER to associate with them, for it would be too much a difficult influence for them to deal with.    And it could change her future.    Mother did discover that they put great store by her, and that they took time to instruct her to "be good"....
Grandmother knew how to do that.   She had gone to the State Teacher's Academy, and she had taught Primary School for 3 years before Forrest found her.

               Village of Shelburne Falls MA

When I was 13, Grandmother showed me this photo of her primary school where she taught.     She was an important piece of the puzzle of my life.

Grandmother had taken a photo of this house, with someone sitting on the porch.   I understand it "belongs to the Brown family" so I assume that my Grandfather bought this, then sold it to a  "cousin" -  The Browns were their B E S T  friends.  It seems my grandmother was like "a sister" to her cousin Ann Brown.

Here is Anne Brown -  A dear friend of my Grandmothers as
well as being a cousin.

The Browns were "cousins" and as they grew up had been in the summers
right by each other on the famous tourist place at York Beach where
the rich and famous gather.   At that time, however, there were about 8
families - close friends - and quite a few relatives
on that ridge that overlooked the beach in Maine.

This is where the Nubble Light House is.   It no longer is operating,
but is kept for display there.   Its horn sounds the warning automatically.

This was Lillias May on her wedding day,
such a lovely Bride.

Here is my Mother Vida with a lady that came to babysit her.
Her mother was quite weak after Vida's birth, and it was
a while before she began to resume her role as Mother.

My Grand-uncle Albert Carpenter visiting at York Beach Maine
probably on the Wedding Day - or when Forrest his brother visited Lillias before getting married in 1914.

This house still is there, I sat on the porch in 1987 when I went with my husband Henry Cash to see it. It seems to me I believe that Mother grew up knowing a strong family, knowing she was loved, and knowing that the family really dared to believe in a future.

I believe this is  York Beach view from the Lighthouse,
because the bay is like a  U shape and so it would be Eastham.
Eastham was on Cape Cod MA itself, and York Beach is
a cove on the shore of Mass.

Vida here on the left, with her sisters Althea and Esther.
Many happy memories in York Beach, Maine.

I believe that my residence in Blaine at Drayton Harbor WA is in conformity with the heritage I have with my Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandparents.
My Grandmother Lillias Carpenter was a woman of strong faith.  She had been raised by her folks in the Methodist Church in Eastham.  Her father Luther Wilbur Brewer was a leather tanner who faithfully served the Lord as a deacon in his church.

This is a very old photo from 1914 when Grandmother and Grandfather got married.   I don't know the details, but you
can see in this photo my grandmother in her wedding dress, with what seems to be grandpa, with others over closer to the water.

I understand they had to have three certificates of the marriage because they lived in different counties, and the work also was in another place.

This was the Waterworks in Shelburne Falls MA where Grandpa worked.

 \
They moved to Adams MA where Mother and her sisters were very close. Here is Esther on the right, with Me next to Mother -  Vida May Donato.

I thought this my aunt not me, but my mother was just 17 when she gave birth to me.
So I believe this is me.  It would 1934, because I look about 9 months old, it would be Spring.

God had His hand upon my life
because of my Mother.
How she loved me.

If you are a mother,
always be your child's best friend.
Let them talk to you.
Be there.
Listen.
Love.
and be firm to teach them God's Way not the world's way.

CLIMBING IS AN ESSENTIAL.

LIVING AT BLAINE I GO PAST

SEMIAHMOO RESORT FROM THE HWY

October 15, 2017  I am now successfully back to living
in my little apartment here in Blaine WA.   My hip operation
revision was a success, and it has been more than a year now
and it looks like I am able to do most things.
I intend to keep climbing.
The Shepherd loves for me, and yes, He cares for you.

DO YOU KNOW THAT THE SHEPHERD LOVES AND CARES FOR YOU?
Here are some things to reflect upon:

  1.   The PAIN that Jesus suffered on the Cross for you and I was not in vain.  He did suffer, and He took on all the mental, emotional, physical, and hurtful pain that ever has or will be experienced by anyone, and took it on Himself, that we may be His Children.    Isaiah chapter 53 tells us that 700 years before He ever came, He would do just that.

  2.  The Precious Blood that Jesus shed as the Lamb of God given for our Sins, is more than anything the ONE CENTRAL ISSUE in Christianity that some have set aside, the Cross on which He died is only important because He did indeed shed His blood for you and I.    John declared BEHOLD, the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of  the world.   John 1.29

   3.   The Payment that Jesus paid for our sins and sorrows is complete and finished.   He cried from the Cross, IT IS FINISHED  -  a mathematical term for a completion of something.  It is Done.   Nothing more has to be paid to make it possible for someone to be saved.  It was what Jesus said when He told Mary, I am the Resurrection and the Life."    Again, He said  "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no one cometh to the Father but by me."  John 14.6.

   4.   The Power of the Resurrection is as effective today as it was when He rose from the grave  He told the disciples several times that He was going to be taken, killed, dead, buried and that He would rise again the Third Day.     Not just once did He tell them.   He told them and told them.           As I read the Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, I see that again  and again He told them that these things were WRITTEN OF LONG BEFORE HE CAME and that HE WAS GOING TO THE CROSS,  but THAT HE WOULD INDEED RISE ON THE THIRD DAY.   My prayer and my goal is that "I may know Him and the power of His Resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His
 death."  Philippians 3.10.

  5.   FINALLY,  last, but not least IS THE PROMISE OF HIS RETURN !
JOHN 14. 1 - 3    LET NOT YOUR HEART BE TROUBLED, YOU BELIEVE IN GOD,
BELIEVE ALSO IN ME.   IN MY FATHER'S HOUSE ARE MANY MANSIONS.   If it were not so, I would have told you.   I go to prepare a place for you.   And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself, that where I am, you may be  also.
JESUS IS COMING FOR YOU AND ME -
THOSE WHO ARE LOOKING FOR HIM  TO COME,
WHO LOVE HIM,
WHO ARE LONGING FOR HIS APPEARING,
WHO ARE THE BLOOD - BOUGHT ONES WHO HE GAVE HIS LIFE FOR,
AND FOR WHOM HE CAME AS A LITTLE BABE IN A MANGER
OVER  2000 YEARS AGO.

HE IS COMING.    ARE YOU READY?

YOU CAN BECOME A CHILD OF THE FATHER BY TRUSTING IN JESUS TODAY.
HE IS THE MESSIAH, THE LORD, THE ADONAI -  LORD AND MASTER -  WHO  WAS, AND IS, AND ALWAYS WILL BE GOD THE SON REVEALING THE FATHER  IN HIMSELF, AND WHO HAS PROMISED THAT TO EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES  IN HIM WOULD HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVEN TO THAT ONE WHO BELIEVES.

     IT WAS JESUS HIMSELF SAID

"  GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE
      HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON
THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM SHOULD NOT
     PERISH, BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE."
 JOHN CHAPTER 3. VERSE 16

By Wm. Henry Cash, Jr.  1927 - 2012

LIVING TODAY AND TOMORROW - LEISURE

Written in 1949

All American communities have a highly developed social life.      Social life is important to everyone, but too many activities are as harmful as not enough.

We must determine what type of clubs or groups will give us the most satisfaction and confine our interest to them.

Recreation is a common element in community life.

Movies [Videos] can be a very force for good or evil, only desultory attempts are made at regulation or supervision.

We must guard against such places of
entertainment, as pool halls, cocktail bars,
parties which have no rules they lead
                                         to difficulties.

                             Henry's Own Thoughts on Leisure

Churches should provide the right type
of recreation for the children and young people.
If we are busy for the Lord, we will not have time to do things that
are questionable.
We should choose the type of recreation
that helps us both in body and mind.

Reading good books and magazines
is a good way to spending one's leisure.

One should spend part of his leisure time
just resting and relaxing.

WHEN HENRY WAS WITH US, HE OFTEN
WAS FOND OF REPEATING THAT IT WAS IMPORTANT TO FIND TIME TO RELAX AND TO BE ABLE TO SLOW DOWN.

WHEN CONSIDERING ACTIVITIES AND LEISURE
IT IS IMPORTANT TO PLAN TIME FOR THE FAMILY
TO BE TOGETHER.
A PERSON NEEDS TO
BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET SO BUSY YOU
DO NOT HAVE TIME FOR YOUR FAMILY

 Posted 2016  March

While Time marches on,   I keep walking.

Here I am heading on into my 80th decade, with a new pair of glasses [ newer than the ones I have in this photo] and I am indeed blessed beyond measure, because I am now situated by the Pacific Ocean at Drayton Harbor, in Blaine WA.
Look for my blog if you like to think about what it means to be a Believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and if you are excited about His Soon Coming.    There is lots to live for, and much to think about.

My verse for today is   Philippians 3 verses 7 - 14
What things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Jesus Christ.
Yea, doubtless, and I count all things but dung, that I may win Christ.   And be found in Him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith, that I may know Him, and the power of His Resurrection, and the Fellowship of His Sufferings, being made conformable unto His death, if by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.   Not as though I had attained, either were already perfect, but I follow after, that I may apprehend [grasp hold of] that for which I am also apprehended [grasped] of Jesus Christ.   Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those thing which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

WITH THE SUNSET HERE IN BLAINE WA
I LEAVE YOU WITH THE THOUGHT
JESUS IS COMING SOON
IT MAY BE IN THE NIGHT TIME
IT MAY BE IN THE MORNING
BUT
IT IS A SURE AND CERTAIN THING
HE IS COMING AGAIN
AND
THE TIME IS ALMOST HERE !

ARE YOU READY ?
I AM LOOKING FOR HIM!

MY BELIEFS ABOUT GOD

by William Henry Cash, Jr 1949
1927 - 2012

*   I believe that there is only one true God.
*  I believe in the Trinity, that God is revealed in three
personalities; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, but there
is only One God.
*I believe that all three personalities of the Trinity are
equal in power, but that each has a specific task to perform.
*  I think of the Father as the Creator, The Son as the Savior,
and the Holy Spirit as the Comforter.
*  I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ was in the beginning with God the Father.
*  I believe that the Lord Jesus was incarnated in the form of
man 1900 [in 1949] years ago to save man from their sins.
*  I believe that when Jesus was on this earth that he was both God and Man.
8*  I believe that Jesus had temptations and was conscious of all physical surroundings, the same as any other man.
* I believe in all the miracles that Jesus performed on this earth.
*  I believe that Jesus went to the cruel cross to pay the price
for our sins.
*  I believe that Jesus was resurrected from the dead, and that
He is preparing a place for those who love Him.
*  I believe that this same Jesus will come again in like manner.
*  I believe that only those who trust Jesus as their personal
Savior will ever see the kingdom of God.
*.  I believe that the whole Bible is the inspired Word of God.
*  I believe in the eternal security of those who have made a true decision to follow Christ as their Savior.

OUR STORY CAME TOGETHER IN 1960

This was my dear husband

just after we got married in 1960.

He was 32, almost 33, and we had written for a year and a half.  We met when he decided to come through Sacramento CA as he went down to meetings and family in San Diego CA.   A month later, he proposed to me by mail.   I accepted, and we were married in Sacto. CA at the Central Baptist Church.     It lasted until he passed on to glory in June of 2012.

THIS IS THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, CRESCENT OR., THE FIRST CHURCH HENRY PASTORED, FROM 1953 - 1962

How I cherish the memories.   When I see Christ, I will be able to say gladly, "By God's Grace, I am here"

Henry graduated from Linda Vista Baptist Bible College & Seminary on May 12, 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and a Bachelor of Theology degree.   On May 18, 1953, he received a degree in Bachelor of Divinity, and a Master of Theology degree. How privileged I am to say that though I did not know before 1959, it was meant to be that we would marry.

How he believed and prayed and dreamed is reflected in this photo of him in 1952.

He was born 1927 while I was born six years later, in 1933.   All the time I was growing up, God gave me "impressions" of someone SURELY going to be my husband one day.   I did not always pay attention.   I did come to a certainty that there WAS someone out there - but I did not always act appropriately.    How thankful I am that God is Sovereign, and that He knows and cares, and that this man was praying for a wife, and believe me, I needed prayer.

My determination did not always stay with me, and I would get side-tracked from what God wanted me to do.   My self-will got in the way.   How it worked out is a testimony to God's grace in my life.

This was my photo at 12 years of age.

Born in 1933, it was 1945 here.
Very little upbringing in any faith, I remember as a little girl my mother saying to me,"When you grow up, and find God and believe in Him, I want you to tell me about Him, and I will believe too."
Somehow, Mother thought that because I was Jewish from my Daddy's side, that I would have "an in" with God.   It was not so, but it did give me A PURPOSE in my life.  I found myself looking for what was true, right, good, and found myself reasoning at a young age, about who God was, is, and should be in my life.
It was in the 5th grade, at age 11, that a gentleman came to my grade school class and asked permission to hand out New Testaments.  The teacher said yes, and I got mine.   In it was written II Timothy 2.15  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
There were other verses given - it was a Gideon Bible, and very good for me.  I looked up all the verses, and gave my life and heart to Jesus as my Lord and Savior.   I was not attending church at that time.   In that year, I remember going to Girl Scouts and learning the ten commandments.   The Girl Scout promise was
"to do my duty to God and my country," among other things, so my heart was tenderized to read God's Word.

You must understand that I am a redhead, and that
in my life, I was "Italian, somewhat but not Jewish"
and very English on my Mom's side.
My mother's folks were from ingrained YANKEE NEW ENGLAND folk.
Their forefathers were independent, many of them Baptist, and inclined to think for themselves.   They came over on the Mayflower to escape persecution, and often were maligned or misunderstood because they were so independent, and did not "just go to church" perse.   Hardworkers, and inclined to be educated generally, they thought for themselves.

MY GRANDFATHER (FORREST RAYMOND CARPENTER) HAD

GEORGE ALBERT CARPENTER.
THIS WAS MY GRANDMOTHER'S MOTHER AS A YOUNG WOMAN,
VIDA MAY INGALLS.  THIS MAY HAVE BEEN THE WEDDING DRESS
TO LUTHER WILBUR BREWER OF EASTHAM, MA.
LUTHER WAS A TANNER, WORKING WITH LEATHER TO MAKE
GEAR FOR HORSES AND CARRIAGES.

On my father's side, I knew little.

All I knew at the time was that his Mother was Jewish, of New York state, and that his father Orestes Donato was Italian, from Northern Italy.   My father had been raised by his Aunt Sally, not his mother.   His father returned to Italy with two brothers.   I know now that he remarried, and that I have relatives in the U S A.  I know now, that my father's father - Orestes Donato, was born in Tunisia, Africa while his father - my great grandfather Major Guiseppe Donato was a Major in the Italian Army while serving under the Italian King.

His wife, Nunia, was born in Russia.    There was no evidence of any religious affiliation - so I assume that they were Jews that came here hoping for a better life.

This was my Dad in 1940.   I was 7 years of age at that time, and thought my father was very handsome.   He had been boarded out "as soon as he was old enough" by Aunt Sally who did what she thought was "proper" and then sent him to the New York Episcopal School of Music - where he learned to sing tenor, read music and to participate in the Episcopal church there where the school was situated.    Aunt Sally was of a "different" way of life for me.  She told palm readings to the rich and famous in order to make a living.  She lived in No Falmouth MA (Cape Cod) in the Summer and in the winter, lived in Florida.    I saw her only about three times in my life, and those were brief.   My biggest memory of the great grandmother is that she was a HUGE woman, who looked much like Golda Meier.   Strong features,  very intelligent, and quite in charge of her family.   My family was never able to discover why my Dad's mother was not raising him.   I did later on in my life discover he was born at the Ipswich NY Women's Reformatory.
My sister asked me, Why would that have been? where he was born?   I told her what I knew.   That in our country a law had been passed around 1884 and was in effect until about 1904 - which declared "a law establishing reformatories and villages" in which people who were homeless, on the street, and without work would be put in the villages, and anyone who was judged "immoral or indigent" was placed in a reformatory.   If a woman got pregnant, unmarried, or if married and the husband was out of work, then she would be considered as "a prostitute" so it is likely my grand-father was out of work, and not able to support her.  Even if the child was his, he could stop authorities from doing this.   They had the power to put anyone where they wanted.    I understand that in "these villages" that were created it was like a nightmare of travesties where the care was just "watching over cattle" not people.
Many tried to commit suicide the conditions were so bad.
Well, such as it was, the law was repealed before I was born. I understand that my Great grandmother Nunzia Donato was living up until 1975.   I would have liked to have known her.

My mother and father, the day after I was born,

on June 9, 1933.

On my mother's side, I am related to the Carpenters, Cooks, Browns, and Greens who many of them were children of those that came over on the Mayflower in 1620.
My Mother at age 17 had me, in 1933.    Strange, but Henry's mother was only 17 when she had him as her first child of nine. Anna Maude Sandine married Wm. Henry Cash, and in 1927 Henry was born in Rison Arkansas.
From what I understand, on Henry's Mother's side, she was a full blooded Swede, named Anna Maude Sandine.
Henry's father was named after a famous preacher Uncle Wm. Henry Cash who before the Civil War was a plantation owner, but after the Civil War he became an Itinerant Circuit Preacher and was beloved by all.

He was the father of Reuben who then had Ray and Roy Cash.   Roy Cash was Johnny Cash the singer's father, while Ray Cash was Henry's grandfather's father.  So Henry's grandfather Garret Gibson Cash was a first cousin to Johnny Cash's father.

Rev. Wm. Henry Cash  1852 - 1912

Apr 12, 1861 – May 9, 1865 were the Civil War years.
I will put a link to the obituary of this dear man.   Although my father in law did not become a preacher, my husband did.  How grateful I am for believing folks in our families that prayed over the years.
This was Henry's birth certificate.
I believe that the "daylight standard time" was

a conflict that day, and the doctor who delivered Henry chose to use May 26, not May 25th.   I understand another friend of mine to have had her Mother choose the 26th instead of 25th but she too celebrates two days of "birth" ...

Here is Wm. Henry Cash (Jr.) at age 14 with
his grandmother Lenora Lee (Akins) Cash

Her birthday was on the 25th.
Later on in this blog I will list more accurate dates for those in my family
who wish to take note of them.

This is the first entry of my life and Henry's.  I look forward to sharing it as I go along.

There is much to discover online from GENEOLOGY WEBSITES.    LATER I SHALL RESEARCH THE FAMILIES ONLINE AND PERHAPS HAVE A BIT MORE TO GO ON.
